Dans le cadeau d’une mère il y a une langue d’origine.
En allemand, un sens du mot anglais pour « cadeau » 

est contagion. A la suite des empires
le langage est une promesse rompue –

le passé, une maison pillée
dont le portail reste entrebâillé.

Derrière les arbres bondés, les pommes pourrissent.
Et pourtant, sous le point de greffe

pointent de nouvelles croissances,
des scions fleurissent.

Comment nettoyer la hache
après que la lame a tranché ?

Certaines branches retournent à leur forme première.
Après l’abattis-brûlis, une multitude de taillis

s’érigent depuis les troncs. L’inchanté
essaye toujours d’avoir le dernier mot.

Russian Runaway

so here it is the oldest breach in the world
giant comma at the south of an endless Siberia
and always on this raw pebble beach
a full flask and a pack of fags
as a viaticum the wind lacerates the ice blocks
a wind come straight from the Mongolian steppe
or the Manchuria plateaus—a wind
from the South-South-East howling and beginning
with the underside of things and creeping
under my tent’s mat and crawling up
making vain all night long
any prayer as the fire has gone silent
as the larches’ shadows divulge
big cats’ silhouettes and all night
I rifle blindly through the folds
and the creases of my bag looking for—
looking for what actually—and I stumble
upon this letter meticulously hidden
whose lunar handwriting wishes me
to be on the threshold of what
I’m running after wishes me to be on the threshold
of the vastest land but the wind howls
and I don’t know how to tell you
that I wish I could suddenly not be here anymore
and I wish there was something other than these terrible
gusts of wind and the Baikal Jew’s harp
I wish that all these fears and these crouching fantasies
all these nights eight thousand kilometers away
from nowhere turn tonight into something other
than this sadness shipped all the way from Manchuria

Célestin de Meeûs

...was born in 1991. His first published work was a collection of short stories in 2014; his most recent one is Russian Runaway (Cheyne 2021). He runs a publishing house called éditions de l’Angle Mort.

Despite the geographical proximity, French readers are unfamiliar with contemporary poetry from the United Kingdom and Ireland—quite the contrary of poetry from the USA, which is widely read in France thanks to some major writers (Dickinson, Plath…) and to the tireless work of Emmanuel Hocquard who launched a book series in 1989 dedicated to contemporary USA poetry. Similarly, Canal is meant to be a bridge over the Channel: Canal’s purpose is to let French readers discover some of the best poetry written today in the United Kingdom and in Ireland—and in exchange, to let English-speaking readers glimpse some of the finest French poetry.

Malgré la proximité géographique, le lectorat français a une connaissance limitée de la poésie contemporaine britannique et irlandaise – contrairement à la poésie états-unienne, très largement lue en France grâce à quelques figures majeures (Dickinson, Plath…) et au travail d’Emmanuel Hocquard qui a lancé en 1989 une collection dédiée à la poésie contemporaine états-unienne. Animée d’un esprit analogue, Canal a vocation à être un pont par-dessus la Manche : le but de Canal est de permettre au public français de découvrir le meilleur de la poésie qui s’écrit aujourd’hui au Royaume-Uni et en Irlande – et en échange, de permettre au public anglophone d’entrevoir une partie de ce qui s’écrit de meilleur en France à l’heure actuelle.
